Memorial Day 2020

Memorial Day 2020

Today we all celebrate the beginning of summer, boating season, grilling, and motorcycle riding season. This holiday signals that spring is in full swing and summer is right around the corner. As we’re all celebrating with friends, family, and neighbors, let’s not forget the real reason for this holiday.

Memorial Day, from the VA website: “Gen. Logan’s order for his posts to decorate graves in 1868 “with the choicest flowers of springtime” urged: “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. … Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”

Remembering those who served in the Civil War, both Union and Confederate, was the reason behind starting, then Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day. To honor the sacrifice of those who served to make this country better for all who live here.

Since then Memorial Day has spread to encompass all soldiers who served our country in all the wars since our country was founded. Many of our members are veterans themselves, which is why it is so important to our club that our mission is to make sure no veteran is forgotten. Marking the gravesites of those who served our country is more than a reminder of their sacrifice. It is a placemark in history, a place for loved ones to grieve, and to serve as a reminder for future generations that this country and our way of life is worth fighting for and preserving.

Be safe this Memorial Day, and never forget the real meaning behind this holiday.

No man left behind.
